1. Plant a tree
This might be the most obvious one, but you can’t go wrong with planting a tree in your yard. Trees clean our air and create oxygen while also providing habitats for local fauna. No yard for trees? 2. Avoid driving
Cars, while convenient, pollute our air. If you have access to public transportation, consider taking the bus or the train to cut down on your carbon footprint. Or, pull your bike out of the garage and enjoy the nice weather on the way to work.
3. Learn to sew
Clothes (including uniforms and jerseys) are frequently sent to landfills after they rip or tear, where they will take years to decompose. In fact, 92 million tons of garments end up in the garbage every year. Rather than tossing a torn shirt in the trash, take the opportunity to learn to mend your clothes. Not only will you cut down on replacement costs, but you’ll also reduce your clothing waste.
4. Don’t buy anything
Much like the clothes that end up in the dump, think of all the things you replace every year, like cleats, helmets, shoulder pads, and training equipment — even if your old one was perfectly fine. Overconsumption is a major contributor to our pollution and waste problem, so before you click “add to cart,” think about the ways you can give your old stuff new life.
5. Volunteer on a clean-up crew
Littering: it’s gross, it’s an eyesore, and it endangers our environment. Beautify your community and heal the planet by joining a litter clean-up effort at your local park, hiking trail, or just around your neighborhood. As a bonus, you’ll get to meet other environmentally-conscious people in your area that you can organize with year round!
6. Make a donation
Sometimes we’re a bit too busy to donate our time to an Earth Day project, but that doesn’t mean you can’t chip in on a worthy cause in other ways. Instead, make a monetary contribution to an eco-friendly organization. This could mean supporting your community garden, donating to national parks, or even funding a wildlife rehabilitation effort. It might not feel like much, but even a small donation can make a big difference in your community and for our planet as a whole.
7. Reconsider your cleaning supplies
